Liverpool dressing room make feelings known on Jamie Carragher after Mo Salah comments
Jamie Carragher has come in for some light-hearted but pointed dressing room stick this week following his criticism of Mohamed Salah, according to Liverpool ace Andy Robertson
by Harry Brent, Isaac Johnson · The MirrorAndy Robertson has revealed that Jamie Carragher has been on the receiving end of some friendly ribbing in the Liverpool dressing room this week, following his critique of Mohamed Salah.
The Scot shared this during a light-hearted chat with Carragher after Liverpool's 2-0 victory over Real Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday evening. Earlier in the week, Carragher, 46, had hit out at Salah for appearing "selfish" after expressing his disappointment that Liverpool hadn't yet formally offered him a new contract.
Salah, whose current deal expires at the end of the season, claimed he was "more out than in" after revealing that an offer wasn't currently on the table following the Reds' 3-2 win over Southampton on Sunday. It's understood that the Egyptian is keen to stay at Anfield and discussions with his agent, Ramy Abbas, are ongoing. However, no agreement has been reached yet.
Nevertheless, Carragher, who expressed his eagerness to see Salah, 32, extend his stay, said he wasn't pleased with the timing of the comments. Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: "I must say I am very disappointed with Salah. In the seven years he's been at the football club, he stopped in the mixed zone [to talk to reporters] twice.
"Which is his right and is absolutely fine. But he decided to stop for the third time away at Southampton on the back of winning Liverpool in the game and putting that out.
"Now, the most important thing for Liverpool this season is not the future of Salah. It's not the future of Virgil van Dijk and it's not the future of Trent Alexander-Arnold. The most important thing is Liverpool winning the Premier League - that is more important than any of those players.
"If he continues to put comments out or his agent keeps putting cryptic tweets out, that's selfish. That's thinking about themselves and not the football club."
Following Liverpool's victory over Real Madrid, CBS grabbed Robertson for a post-match interview, and he couldn't hide his amusement as he discussed Carragher's criticism.
"He [Carragher] has been getting a bit of stick in the changing room that's for sure," Robertson, 30, said with a chuckle. Pressed for details, he playfully deflected: "No comment, I think I'll leave that!"
Reflecting further, Robertson acknowledged that the former Liverpool centre-back had done nothing untoward.
"I think he [Carragher] gets paid to do his job and I think all you all do," he said. "It's part and parcel of football, he has to give his opinion and whether we agree with it or not, sometimes is a different story."
