Pep Guardiola keeps his word on possible Man City relegation with detail in new contract
Pep Guardiola is seemingly ready to put an end to speculation over his future following reports that the Manchester City boss is set to put pen to paper on a new contract
by Dan Marsh · The MirrorThere is NO relegation release clause in Pep Guardiola's proposed new contract with Manchester City, it has been claimed.
Speculation over the Catalan's future has grown in recent weeks after it emerged he was sounded out by the FA over the England job. And while Guardiola has kept his cards close to his chest, he recently indicated his decision over whether to stay or leave City was forthcoming.
News broke on Tuesday night that Guardiola had agreed in principle a one-year contract extension with the reigning Premier League champions with an option for a further year.
And there is said to be no break clause which would come into effect should the club be relegated from the top-flight if they are found guilty of financial wrongdoing by an independent commission.
As first revealed by The Guardian, Guardiola would not be entitled to leave The Etihad if they are found guilty in their hearing over 115 alleged charges. Potential punishments could include relegation, though seemingly neither side has felt it necessary to include any sort of break clause.
Guardiola previously insisted that he would be more likely to stay if City were hit with a severe punishment - even though the club have repeatedly stressed their innocence and deny the allegations against them.
And he has seemingly stuck to his word ahead of committing his future to City for at least a further 12 months. When he was asked if he would stay should City be demoted, Guardiola replied: “A good question. I will answer when I have the sentence.

“You are questioning like we have been punished. And in the moment we are innocent until guilt is proved. I know the people want it. I know, I feel it. I will wait. Wait and see it and after the sentence has been done we will come here and explain it. But absolutely I will not consider my future [if] it depends on being here [Premier League] or being in League One. Absolutely.
“There is more chance to stay if we are in League One than if we were in the Champions League.”
Guardiola's contract extension will come as a major boost to Manchester City, who currently find themselves four points behind Liverpool in the title race.
