'Get a job somewhere else' – Roy Keane fumes at Alejandro Garnacho in heated rant
Former Man Utd captain Roy Keane slammed Red Devils winger Alejandro Garnacho for his lack of goal celebration following the youngster's recent frustrations towards fans criticising him
by Kasra Moradi · The MirrorRoy Keane says Alejandro Garnacho should “get a job somewhere else” if he can’t bring himself to celebrate goals for Manchester United.
Garnacho was on the scoresheet as United sealed a 3-0 win over Leicester in Ruud van Nistelrooy’s last match in charge on Sunday. The 20-year-old came off the bench to curl in a stunning effort in the 82nd minute.
But the Argentine winger’s reaction was noticeably low-key, while his captain Bruno Fernandes revealed post-game that Garnacho believes he has lost the support of the Red Devils fans. “I told him people will always moan but lots of people like you and enjoy what you do,” Fernandes explained. “I told him to celebrate, it was something special.”
Now legendary United captain and pundit Keane has weighed in by blasting Garnacho’s muted celebration. The former midfielder argued that players should respect fans who have travelled to watch them play, adding that he should leave the club if he can’t at least celebrate.
Keane, speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, brought to you by Sky Bet, said: “If you can’t celebrate a goal, there is something drastically wrong with this game. Whatever has gone on off the pitch for any player – it could be family stuff – you work all week, you’re playing the game to score a goal.
“When you score a goal, there should be nothing else on your mind. You’ve got fans who have travelled, paid fortunes to get there, and he’s [ Garnacho] on about people having a go at him.”
He added: “People make sacrifices to travel to watch Manchester United, he scores a brilliant goal, they are having a tough time – and if a younger player can’t enjoy scoring a goal for Man United, then get a job somewhere else.”
Ian Wright offered a contrasting view to his fellow pundit, resulting in a heated debate between the pair. Wright, who was more understanding of Garnacho’s actions, argued: “For a 20-year-old, he’s still going through the journey of what he’s doing. That [fans’ criticism] affected him to the point where he didn’t celebrate.
“That’s how much it affected him. He scored a great goal, but he’s worried about that. It’s the saddest thing in the world when someone scores and they don’t celebrate because of something that has happened. He’s probably playing in anger. He can’t not think about it.”
Garnacho's subdued celebration came after a frosty encounter with a fan ahead of the midweek Europa League match against PAOK. A YouTuber criticised the Argentina international’s first touch and passing to his face, leading the star to sarcastically say: “Why aren’t you playing man?”
Despite the criticism he's received, the winger has enjoyed a decent season so far and has seven goals and four assists in 18 matches across all competitions.
