Ruben Amorim getting so angry that coaches had to step in sums up new Man Utd boss
Ruben Amorim will be hoping to bring some of his fire and determination to Manchester United, who kick off their new era under the Portuguese boss against Ipswich Town this weekend
by Fasika Zelealem · The MirrorRuben Amorim's love of football saw the new Manchester United boss struggle to control his emotions during his playing days.
The 39-year-old is a day away from taking charge of his first game with the Premier League giants, who play visitors to Ipswich Town on Sunday (November 24).
Amorim - a former Benfica and Portugal midfielder - enjoyed a 13-year playing career, with a majority of it coming in his home country, except for a brief stint with Qatari club Al-Wakrah before he retired in 2016.
Amorim's hot-headed behaviour while training at Al-Wakrah was discussed by his then-manager Mauricio Larriera, which no doubt demonstrates his desire for success - a personality trait United fans will surely hope he instils in the squad.
Larriera spoke about his former player's time in Qatar and his training antics in an interview with O Jogo. He said: "He always played very well, but unfortunately he was sent off in one game. No, in two. And he apologised to me for it. It's part of the game, but he was even more upset than me when things didn't work out. The impotence he felt overcame him.
"In one game he got two yellows and we ended up losing. In the other it was for a foul, a bit due to tiredness and a bit due to impotence. He felt very powerless. In training he'd get upset and we'd say to him, 'Ruben, please don't get upset'. Sometimes it was him, 'Mauricio, please don't get upset'.
"He didn't understand certain things, Qatar was in the process of growth. When he was angry, I'd hug him and say, 'relax, Qatar is like that'. He'd tell me the same thing."
Amorim's display of his overwhelming passion has spilled onto the touchline several times during his Sporting Lisbon tenure with his injection of fiery enthusiasm sorely needed on the red side of Manchester.
Sitting 13th in the table with two wins in their last seven games, Amorim has quite the job on his hands to turn around the fortunes of United starting with Ipswich Town this weekend.
