Atletico Madrid call out Spanish police in astonishing social media post
Atletico Madrid made their frustrations clear after a police account posted an image of their stadium next to a statement over racist chanting at last month's El Clasico
by Alan Smith · The MirrorAtletico Madrid have launched an astonishing rant at Spanish police after a social media account run by officers posted a picture of the Wanda Metropolitano alongside a statement saying that three people had been arrested at the recent Clasico between Real Madrid and Barcelona for xenophobic chanting.
The original post is likely to have been sent by an officer without much knowledge of football, according to Spanish media, but Atletico are justifiably fuming to have been dragged into the story.
Atletico wrote in a post on X: “CM from @policin, we're here to help you. The people who have been arrested are fans of another Madrid team. The stadium in the photo you've posted is ours and has nothing to do with this matter. It's probably just a mistake.”
The club also included a screenshot of the offending post in their tweet before the police account had the chance to delete and reupload their own post.
The chants in question were directed at Barcelona players during last month’s encounter at the Santiago Bernabeu.
An updated statement from the police, accompanying a generic picture of a police van, read: “3 arrested for uttering #in racist remarks against 2 players of #fútbol during #ElClásico played last October. Those arrested made xenophobic statements that violated the dignity and moral integrity of football.”
Atletico followed up with another reply, which read: Good job, this photo shows the scene of the crime much better. It can be clearly seen in the reflection of the van…“
Barca ran out 4-0 winners with a brace from Robert Lewandowski followed up by late goals from Yamine Lamal and Raphinha.
Barca are five points clear of Real in the La Liga table but have played an extra game. Atletico sit in third spot, a further point behind.
