Gutted Man Utd star had to be consoled at Etihad despite thrilling Man City win
Manchester United stunned Manchester City with two late goals in the Premier League on Sunday, but Mason Mount left the Etihad Stadium in a very different mood after picking up an injury
by Felix Keith · The MirrorManchester United left the Etihad Stadium in a fantastic mood on Sunday after completing a late turnaround to beat Manchester City, but one of their players did not share the feeling.
Bruno Fernandes’ penalty and Amad Diallo’s cool finish after rounding Ederson saw United win 2-1 against Pep Guardiola’s struggling side. There were jubilant scenes on Sunday evening among the red half of Manchester, with Amad the toast of the hour after winning a penalty and scoring the winner.
It was a very different story for Mason Mount, whose injury woes continued in a cruel blow. The United midfielder was handed a start against City after a handful of cameos under Ruben Amorim, but the opportunity turned to a nightmare.
Mount has struggled with calf and hamstring injuries since joining United for £55million from Chelsea in the summer of 2023 and has made just 32 appearances in all competitions. Having started at City, he was forced off with a muscle injury after just 14 minutes, with Kobbie Mainoo replacing the clearly distraught and frustrated 25-year-old.
The Manchester Evening News reports that, while some United players stopped in the mixed zone to speak to journalists after the game, Mount cut a very different figure. He looked crestfallen and accepted a hug from someone in the entourage of rapper Aitch, who was revelling in his side’s win.
Amorim tried to console his player in his post-match press conference. “He fits our style,” said Amorim. “He's a very good player inside and also outside the pitch. The type of character we want in this team and the club wants. He made the movement and stretched his leg, he felt something. But we need him.”
Mount will be hugely disappointed if the scan reveals a long-term injury, having fought so hard to get fit. The midfielder went to a fitness camp in Portugal over the summer, only to pick up a hamstring issue early in the campaign. Overall, he has missed 30 United matches due to injury, according to Transfermarkt.
The most frustrating thing for Mount is that he could be playing a starring role under Amorim. “The first thing is that he is working really hard,” Amorim said of Mount before the 4-0 win over Everton. “And then you have to understand the human also. He wants this really badly. That is the most important thing.”
“He has proven to all of you that he is a talented player. He was European champion, so we believe a lot in him. He has to stay fit. And like all the guys in the team, they are quality players, they have to improve and believe in themselves.”
