Fans fume as Sky Sports miss coverage of Liverpool goal to show 'absolutely pointless replay'

Liverpool took the lead after half an hour of the clash at St Mary's through Dominik Szoboszlai, but Sky Sports were showing a replay of a different incident at the time

Football fans were angered by Sky Sports' coverage of Liverpool's clash with Southampton on Sunday as the broadcaster missed coverage of the opening goal.

The Reds headed to the south coast looking to increase their lead at the top of the Premier League table to eight points, and after a fairly low-key start they took the lead after 30 minutes.

The coverage of the match had just cut away to a replay of weak shot from Reds full-back Conor Bradley, and as the audible groans of Southampton fans could be heard over the footage, when the camera cut back to live coverage of the game the ball could be seen nestling into the back of the net.

It wasn't until the first replay of the incident that fans could see what had happened, as Saints goalkeeper Alex McCarthy had rolled the ball out to midfielder Mateus Fernandes, who was under pressure on the edge of his own box.

Fernandes passed the ball back to Flynn Downes, who was instantly pressured by Curtis Jones. Downes' clearance was poor and went straight to Szoboszlai, who finished well with his left foot.

Fans were quick to express their anger on social media. “Sky Sports with an absolutely pointless replay which in turn results in the goal being missed,” one viewer said.

“How in 2024 are Sky Sports still showing replays instead of the live action? Put the replay in a smaller screen in the corner and let us watch the game live,” another vented. A third commented: “Great finish by Szobo btw. Sadly missed cos Sky wanted to show a replay of a pea roller.”

“Great work from Sky there,” said another. “Why show a replay given what was happening on the pitch?!”

Many shared the sentiment about the goal, having seen the hosts make similar errors in the past: “Why would Sky show a replay when a Southampton goalkeeper has possession. Almost guaranteed to miss something, or in this case, a goal.”
