Jamie Carragher claimed Marcus Rashford was "very lucky" to escape a red card in Sunday's clash with Aston Villa.

The Manchester United forward was booked during the second-half of his side's trip to Villa Park. And just moments later, he tripped Leon Bailey.

The home crowd demanded a sending-off but the referee kept his cards in his pocked, with Carragher believing Rashford was fortunate. Speaking on commentary, the former Liverpool star said: "He is very lucky. He knows he can't get the ball. That should be a second yellow and Manchester United should be down to ten men."

Carragher then added: "Rashford knew the player had gone past him. He was almost tripping him up."

Rashford was substituted just moments after the incident by Erik ten Hag. It was the latest chapter in what has been a tricky start to the season for the forward.

He has four goals to his name so far in all competitions but was surprisingly dropped during a draw against Crystal Palace last month. He was then baffilingly withdrawn at half-time in the midweek draw with Porto despite finding the back of the net.

Had the United star been dismissed, he would have become the third sending-off for the side over the past week. Bruno Fernandes was red-carded in the defeat to Spurs at the weekend - a decision that was later rescinded upon appeal. But the Portuguese playmaker was then sent off again in the dramatic Europa League draw with Porto.
