Forgotten Premier League winner tells Ruben Amorim his priority job at Man Utd
Ruben Amorim is set to oversee his first game as Manchester United boss against Ipswich this weekend and has been issued a simple instruction by a former Red Devil ahead of his debut
by Daniel Orme · The MirrorRuben Amorim has been told to find a “style of play” at Manchester United - something that he has instantly agreed with.
The Portuguese coach is set to oversee his first game as the Red Devils new boss this weekend. United travel to Portman Road on Sunday for a clash with newly-promoted Ipswich.
Amorim has already had his stars hard at work at Carrington but he has already been offered some advice to ensure his tenure gets off to a positive start. Ex-United star and Premier League winner Danny Drinkwater believes he needs to instil a definitive style at Old Trafford.
Speaking with BBC Radio Manchester, the former midfielder said: “Hopefully the new manager will come in and you know get off to a good start and then the players will react to him nicely. So I think they’ll have a strong finish definitely.”
He added: “I think now until the end of the season they just really need to establish something. They need to get like a style of play and a lot of confidence and maybe use it as a bit of a starter point for the next season really, I don’t think United fans can expect too much too soon.”
Amorim has already had the opportunity to give supporters an insight into his approach. During his first interview as United boss, he claimed that his first job was to introduce a new “identity” at the club.
He said: “We know that we need time, but we have to win time. To win time is to win games. But the most important thing for me is identity. So since day one we will start with our identity.

“Of course we are going to prepare the games, but we will focus a lot in our game model. How to play, how to press, these small things, small details. You cannot go 100% on every detail because it will be confusing for the players. So if I have to say one thing, my main goal, my first goal, is identity.”
Following the trip to Ipswich, Amorim then gets the chance to manage at Old Trafford for the first time. The Red Devils take on Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League group stage next Thursday ahead of another home game against Everton.
Amorim will be keen to continue the momentum set by interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy. The Red Devils won three out of the four games he managed before being told he would not be part of Amorim’s coaching staff.
