Liverpool news: Reds defender labelled "the worst" as enquiry made for Lyon star

Liverpool defender Kostas Tsimikas had a night to forget as Greece were hammered by England with the Reds already plotting a January move for Lyon forward Rayan Cherki

Liverpool headed into the international break sitting pretty on top of the Premier League.

The Reds have surpassed all expectations under Arne Slot and already boast a comfortably lead at the top domestically. They've been equally as impressive in the Champions League with their leading lights heading off to represent their countries this week.

Curtis Jones enjoyed a stellar England debut, due reward for his impressive start to the season, as the Three Lions saw off Greece in the week. Their next assignment is against the Republic of Ireland - which will pit Liverpool players against each other at Wembley.

Here's the latest news involving those from Anfield.

Kelleher dismisses England injuries

Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher has dismissed the idea that England's injuries will hinder their quality ahead of their clash with England. The two countries meet in the Nations League this weekend, with both teams coming off victories against Greece and Finland respectively.

However interim manager Lee Carsley saw nine players pull out of his squad, many of them citing injuries. Kelleher, meanwhile, saved a penalty as the Irish secured in a 1-0 win thanks to Evan Ferguson's strike. The Wembley fixture will see England hope to land Nations League promotion as they currently sit top of League B Group 2, level on points with Greece and six ahead of Ireland.

He said: "We know what to expect. They’ll be quality. There’s a lot of players missing, but they’ve a lot of strength in depth and a lot of strength in depth in their squad as well. We need to recover because we’ve to go again in three days. But we’ll be ready for them.”

Kostas Tsimikas had a poor outing in a Greece shirt

Reds defender labelled "the worst"

Liverpool defender Kostas Tsimikas was labelled as "the worst on the field" during England's 3-0 win away at Greece on Thursday night with his home country's press taking aim at him.

Tsimikas played 57 minutes for the Greeks before he was subbed off for Dimitrios Pelkas on what was a night to forget. Jones netted on his England debut, but his club team-mate Tsimikas was ripped to shreds by Greek oulet Ta Nea, who hammered him.

They called him "the worst on the field". Their verdict read: "Given that he plays in Liverpool and you expect something more from him, Kostas Tsimikas didn't help much while he played and also missed the chance in the 30th minute when he had the chance to pass to [Giorgos] Masoura, who was waiting alone."

Rayan Cherki is on Liverpool's radar

Reds enquire over Lyon forward

Liverpool have made enquiries about landing Lyon’s £21 million-rated frontman Rayan Cherki, reports French outlet L’Equipe. Cherki only turned 21 in August but has already played 152 times for Lyon, where he came through the academy, and there is already talk of him moving on.

He signed a new deal over the summer and Lyon have slapped a €25million (£20.8m) price tag on their player. They would prefer to keep him until the end of the season, but may need to sell in January.
