Everton brutally troll Anthony Gordon after penalty miss on Goodison Park return

Former Everton star Anthony Gordon missed a golden opportunity to score against his old club when he saw a penalty saved by Jordan Pickford at Goodison Park on Saturday

Everton didn't let Anthony Gordon forget his penalty miss against his former employers in a hurry.

Gordon, who came through the Toffees' academy before leaving for Newcastle in January 2023, has been on spot-kick duty with Alexander Isak out injured. He scored from 12 yards in the draw with Manchester City at St James' Park, but was denied by Everton keeper Jordan Pickford at Goodison Park on Saturday.

"Wish they had of played the buzzer from half time when the penalty was saved," one fan wrote on social media. The club's official account duly obliged, posting a video of the save along with the buzzer noise from 90s quiz show Family Fortunes.

Everton's fans seemed to enjoy the post. "Admin having so much fun with this and I’m all here for it," wrote one, with another saying "Give admin a payrise".

Gordon's failure to score from 12 yards ended up proving crucial. The game ended goalless, with Everton later denied a penalty of their own after a clash between Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Dan Burn.

Everton manager Sean Dyche had no complaints with Newcastle's penalty, awarded when James Tarkowski fouled Sandro Tonali off the ball. "The first one there is toing and froing but you can't throw someone to the ground," he told Match of the Day.

"Then the one that wasn't, if that's in the middle of the pitch it is a foul. He is going to strike the ball and he player has interrupted the fact he is going to strike the ball. You think he would have a look at it."

Gordon had previously talked up his confidence from the penalty spot after scoring against Manchester City. Even though he missed on this occasion, Magpies mahager Eddie Howe did not appear too worried.

"I though the did really well [in general," Howe told Sky Sports when asked about Gordon. "The disappointing thing for him and us will be the penalty. He has his process, it has been brilliant for him, it is one of those moments - a long wait for him to think about it and it is never easy. His overall performance was very good.

"I was a lot happier. Our best away performance in a long time. I thought we controlled the game, I was pleased with the mentality. We can complain about not winning but you have to look at the performance overall and it is much better."

Gordon could end up returning to a wide role after the international break, having played through the middle in each of the last two matches. Isak and Callum Wilson have both been out injured, but the pair are in contention to return against Brighton later in the month.
