Why Leicester's Wilfred Ndidi was not sent off for Cole Palmer incident vs Chelsea
by Stephen Killen · football.londonLeicester City midfielder Wilfred Ndidi escaped retrospective action during the first-half following a late tackle on Chelsea star Cole Palmer. However, the Video Assistant Referee opted against intervening after Andy Madley issued a yellow card for the Nigerian.
After Palmer beat his marker and burst forward, Ndidi appeared to catch the England international on the Achilles, raking down and leaving the playmaker in a heap.
However, there was no further action taken on the yellow card and football.london understands that a red card wasn't issued because Ndidi came from a short distance and the challenge lacked intensity.
As a result, Paul Tierney, in Stockley Park, agreed with the on-field decision and felt there was no necessary ground to intervene. Chelsea eventually ran out 2-1 winners in an incident-packed early kick-off at the King Power Stadium, maintaining their place in third.
Nicolas Jackson opened the scoring in the first-half with a brilliant attacking goal. The Blues had the ball in the back of the net again a short time later through Noni Madueke, however Marc Cucurella was adjudged to have strayed offside in the build-up.
Enzo Fernandez added a second 15 minutes from time but Enzo Maresca, against his former club, was forced to weather pressure in the dying embers.
There were strong claims for a penalty when Stephy Mavididi went to ground under the challenge from Wesley Fofana but both the on-field referee and VAR felt there was no infringement.
The Foxes did get a penalty in stoppage time, which was converted by Jordan Ayew, after Bobby Decordova-Reid was bundled over in the box. Initially offside was given but VAR stepped in to award the spot-kick.
