Daniel Levy transfer truth revealed as Tottenham technical director shares role in player signings

Daniel Levy has come under some criticism from the Tottenham fans over the years - but technical director Johan Lange outlines his role when signing a player

Tottenham technical director Johan Lange has revealed that Daniel Levy doesn't have an opinion on 'whether a certain player would be a good fit or not' for the club.

Lange, 44, joined Spurs in October 2023 having spent the previous three years at Aston Villa. The Dane had helped stabilise the Villains as a Premier League outfit but departed the West Midlands club after Monchi arrived from Sevilla in the summer and reunited with boss Unai Emery.

During his first 12 months at Tottenham, Lange has been ruthless. In the summer transfer window, Tottenham signed five players - including Dominic Solanke for £65million - while eight players left the club. Tanguy Ndombele was paid off with a year left on his contract and Spurs released Ryan Sessegnon and Japhet Tanganga.

Although the most recent set of transfers have adhered to the Tottenham supporters' demands, some business in the past has not had the same effect. Criticism has often been directed at chairman Levy for Tottenham's transfer activity, or lack of it, from a section of the fanbase, as Spurs continue to struggle to break that elusive trophy drought.

However, Lange has now said that Levy doesn't have an impact on whether each signing will be right for the Tottenham squad, and every player brought in isn't solely down to him.

"Daniel has great experience and a fantastic network," Lange told the Evening Standard. "Not to play to that strength would be silly.

"Ange [Postecoglou] and I have ongoing discussions all the time about the squad. It’s far from only about transfers... [but] of course, when we come close to the window, it’s about how we want to ideally end up after the window.

"When I speak with Daniel and Scott Munn [chief football officer], it’s more about strategy and developing the club overall. Daniel’s network can play a part of some transactions, case by case, but he will never go in and have an opinion about whether a certain player is a good fit or not."

On the pitch, Tottenham continued their impressive run of form with their fifth successive victory during Thursday's 2-1 win over Hungarian side Ferencvaros in the Europa League. Pape Matar Sarr gave Spurs the lead in the first half before Brennan Johnson added a second late on to wrap up the three points.

Youngsters Mikey Moore, Lucas Bergvall, Will Lankshear and Archie Gray started for Tottenham in Hungary and impressed as they made it two wins from two in Europe's second tier competition. Speaking after the game, Ange Postecoglou said: "Irrespective of who you play in Europe away, it's always a challenge.

"You saw with the atmosphere the crowd create, they get really behind their team. The conditions as well... there's a whole range of things you need to deal with.

"Obviously, I made quite a number of changes to the team, including putting the young boys in, but I thought they handled it really, really well. We needed to defend and defend well, we played some good football and created some good chances, maybe could have had a couple more and most importantly we won an away European tie which I think is a credit to the lads."
