Phil Foden point made in response to Ethan Nwaneri's first Premier League goal for Arsenal
by James Quinlan · football.londonArsenal supporters were ecstatic to see teenage talent Ethan Nwaneri score his first Premier League goal against Nottingham Forest on Saturday, and were quick to draw comparisons to Manchester City's Phil Foden.
The Gunners came into their first match after the November international break with some amount of pressure. Defeat would have allowed Premier League leaders Liverpool to move 12 points in front.
Instead, Arsenal rallied under Mikel Arteta with goals from Bukayo Saka and Thomas Partey putting them well on the path to victory. Nwaneri's 86th-minute strike, low into the net from close range, therefore arrived as an additional bonus.
The prodigy celebrated this landmark moment in his young career coolly as the Emirates Stadium erupted.
Supporters keeping tabs on the action from afar were also evidently excited as they expressed their emotions across social media. In the direct aftermath to the goal there was also another trend quickly emerging.
They began to bring Man City star Phil Foden into the conversation. Naturally, comparisons could possibly be made given their shared play in the attacking midfielder role of their teams, however on this occasion it was Gunners fans poking fun.
Last season's Premier League player of the year is yet to get off the mark with domestic goals this term, so now trails 17-year-old Nwaneri, prompting some witty reaction...
Six-time English top-flight winner Foden endured a slow start to the season after a disappointing Euro 2024 tournament. He missed three of the opening four matches, now in eight total appearances so far - totalling 461 minutes - he has zero goals.
Nwaneri has been handed six Premier League appearances now in the 2024/25 campaign, totalling 66 minutes. His first goal in the competition arrived in the 56th of those minutes.
Gunners fans will ultimately be hoping their youngster can emulate the Man City star, by becoming a regular fixture in Arteta's side over the years and maybe get his hands on that coveted trophy.
