A five-vehicle collision on the A19 saw two people injured on Thursday morning.

The incident occurred shortly before 8am and saw the emergency services and highways authorities on the scene. Two people were injured, but North East Ambulance Service staff were able to treat them both at the scene and then safely discharge them.

The incident - on the southbound carriageway - saw a lane closed and lengthy tailbacks, with National Highways at one stage advising motorists to beware of delays of "at least 90 minutes".

The lane re-opened at shortly before 9am.

In a statement, a North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called to a five vehicle road traffic collision on the A19 at Easington shortly before 7.30 this morning. We dispatched a double crewed ambulance and a duty officer. Two patients were treated and discharged at the scene. "

Durham Constabulary directed inquiries to the highways authorities.

National Highways: North East later shared: "All lanes have reopened on the A19 in Tyne and Wear southbound between the B1320 Peterlee and the A181 Wheatley Hill following a collision. Thank you for your patience, please have a safe onward journey."
