Baby names that are set to go 'extinct' in 2024 as they fall out of favour - full list

Some baby names have gone out of fashion - and it seems that these 20 choices are at risk of becoming extinct this year

by · ChronicleLive

If you're expecting a baby this year, choosing a name can be a daunting task.

A good starting point could be the annual list of most popular names.

Pop culture, films, music and other trends often influence new entries, while some names fall out of favour. BabyCentre's baby name experts analysed data from 2022-23 and identified names that have seen a significant drop in popularity, potentially facing extinction this year.

Some of these names were once very common, but changing trends mean they are now less frequently chosen. American boy's names like Keanu, Ryder and Buddy have seen a dip in popularity, as have Welsh names such as Griff and Bowen.

Surnames used as first names have also become less popular recently. For girls' names at risk of extinction, unusual spellings seem to be on the decline.

Names like Kiera, Alyssia and Elyse lost popularity in 2023 and could dip further this year. While old-fashioned names like Ivy and Ada were popular last year, others - such as Flo, Vivienne and Peggy - were not so common, reports the Express.

Here's a rundown of the top 20 most endangered names for babies in 2024, split by gender.
