Motability Scheme update means more people can claim extra support - here's how to apply

by · ChronicleLive

The Motability Scheme has recently updated its image to better assist people in determining whether they qualify for additional aid. The revamp involves a fresh logo and updated design, but crucially, it makes information clearer and more accessible for those looking to check their eligibility for the scheme's benefits.

Run by Motability Operations, the scheme facilitates individuals receiving certain disability benefits at higher or enhanced rates – allowing them to allocate a portion, or all, of their benefit to lease a new car, scooter, or wheelchair-accessible vehicle. Those on Disability Living Allowance (DLA), Personal Independence Payment (PIP), Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP), and War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement (WPMS) may be eligible.

Furthermore, the scheme contributes towards costs like maintenance, repairs, and insurance. CEO Andrew Miller has previously commented: "We're working with car manufacturers and our partners with the aim of providing our customers with stand-out value and the scheme is 45% cheaper on average compared to alternative options."

"During this period of rising costs and an unprecedented period of change for the car industry, we're committed to ensuring the sustainability of the scheme so that we can continue to keep our customers connected now and in the long term."

How to check eligibility for the Motability SchemeIf you're uncertain about your eligibility for the Motability Scheme, you can utilise the scheme's convenient online tool here. The tool will ask who the enquiry is for, which benefit or allowance you are currently receiving, and the remaining duration of your benefit, reports the Manchester Evening News.

How to apply for the Motability SchemeIf you think you qualify for the scheme, you can apply either through a car dealership or online. You can visit any dealership of your choice and they will assist you directly with your order - this primarily applies if you're in the market for a car, scooter, or powered wheelchair.

If you're seeking a wheelchair accessible vehicle supplier or adaptations installer, you don't need to worry about distance as they can come to you to help complete your order. To apply with a dealer, you will need the following:

  • The applicant's National Insurance Number or Customer Reference Number
  • The applicant's UK passport or driver's licence
  • A grant award letter where applicable
  • Driving licences for all drivers and details of any claims history
  • Driver declaration if the driver of the vehicle is not present

This is particularly useful if you need more time to decide on the best vehicle for you. To apply online, you will need:

  • The applicant's UK passport or driving licence
  • The applicant's National Insurance Number or Customer Reference Number
