Drivers could be banned from parking on pavements in huge change to UK law

National parking ban could hit millions of drivers through huge change to UK law

by · ChronicleLive

Motorists across the UK could be facing a seismic shift in day-to-day driving as new laws loom that may ban them from parking on pavements. The prohibition could soon go nationwide, expanding beyond the current restrictions in London, marking a significant change drivers will need to navigate.

The proposal has been circulating for some time but never cemented by past Governments. Labour is now poised to make a definitive decision on its implementation. In light of this, Transport Secretary Louise Haigh acknowledged that the Government was "considering options" about whether to enact this substantial alteration for roadway etiquette.

Campaigners are pushing for a pavement parking ban across the board, arguing it's crucial for the safety of disabled individuals and vulnerable pedestrians, including mums and dads with buggies. Continuous complaints highlight that today's larger-scale vehicles frequently obstruct walkways, leaving no choice for pedestrians but to risk walking on the road.

Addressing these concerns, Ms Haigh expressed her understanding of the accessibility issues presented, reports Birmingham Live.

However, speculation abounds on how such a ban would be enforced comprehensively, considering the challenge for council traffic wardens to monitor every street. Moreover, apprehension exists over the additional demands on local authority resources this enforcement would necessitate — a point Ms Haigh touched upon during her briefing to the Transport Committee.

She stated: "I completely recognise how important it is for accessibility. We're considering what options we have available, because we want to make sure that any measures are not burdensome on local authorities and are done in the most effective way. But I am really committed to responding to the consultation as quickly as possible."
