Stray dogs rescued from the streets to star in calendar raising funds for local animal charities
by Nicole Goodwin · ChronicleLiveDogs rescued in the North East will have their stories shared in a 2025 calendar to help raise awareness and funds for local animal charities.
Mickey is just one of 12 dogs to feature in the calendar after he was found straying in an unwell and dehydrated state. Although his owners at the time were informed that Mickey had been found and taken to Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter, they never came to collect him.
It was then down to the charity to find him a new home and get him the medical treatment he needed. Mickey was put on a drip at the vets due to dehydration. He also suffered from epileptic seizures so was placed in a foster home before he was rehomed. He’s now enjoying life again.
Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter is one of three charities which will receive proceeds from the calendar, which is now on sale. Berwick Animal Rescue Kennels and Northumberland Dog Rescue will also receive proceeds from the sales of the calendar.
Another featured dog is Storm who was found straying in Northumberland and was taken to Northumberland Dog Rescue to be cared for. Checks on her microchip revealed she had recently been re-homed but the new owners didn't want her back. Storm is currently looking for her new home.
All dogs featured in the calendar have been rescued by Northumberland County Council's animal welfare team and partner charities. Each dog has their back story printed alongside their photograph. The calendars are available for a minimum donation of £4.49 and can be ordered online here or by contacting the animal welfare team on 0345 600 6400.
Northumberland County Councillor Gordon Stewart, cabinet member for Looking after our Communities said: "The rescue kennels are very busy caring for mistreated, unwanted or neglected dogs before they are carefully rehomed. They are costly to run and depend on the generosity of donations.
"If you are able to, please purchase a calendar - it's a great way for you to support three local animal charities who we work closely with and help them continue their fantastic work."
He added: "Please remember, owning a dog is a long-term commitment. They need time, love and care and can be costly to feed and look after – especially if there are unexpected vets bills. Always think very carefully before you take on the commitment of a new pet."
