UK ex-pat who's lived in Tenerife for 10 years says tourists should be 'very careful' this winter

A British expat residing in the sun-soaked climes of Tenerife has shared a stark caution with tourists heading to the Canary Island hotspot this winter season.

The Brit, who made Tenerife home for over a decade, has turned to TikTok - under the handle @theknightstrider1 - to raise awareness about an annual issue that flares each winter.

Pickpocketing, it seems, is rife, particularly as Tenerife's peak tourist period does not die down like mainland Spain's. The content creator points out the influx of criminal gangs who view the high season as prime time for theft, almost treating pilfering pockets as a "full-time job".

In his informative video, he makes it clear: "They are very good at it, and they will do pickpocketing. They will steal from cars if you leave stuff inside them, so please do be very careful with your wallets, and stuff like that."

Adding to his guideline for safety, he notes: "If you're down here, busy, the golden mile area, the Sunday markets, the Tuesday markets, all of that - those busy areas - people bumping into you, just be careful. Just like at home, we do have pickpockets around.", reports the Mirror.

Furthermore, he shares a personal tip: "I normally just take my little wallet out, and I have it in my front pocket. Just be very careful and aware. You'll be absolutely fine if you are but, unfortunately, so many people switch off, and they have their wallet busting with cash hanging out of their back pocket."

He warns that pickpockets can be shockingly quick, pouncing to pinch your possessions when you're off guard. And a heads-up for drivers dont leave valuables on show in your car, as thieves frequently snatch these.

They keep an eye out for pricey tech like cameras and iPads, which should always be kept secure and out of sight. Hes recently been hearing "more and more" about tourists being targeted.

The video set off a wave of comments online. A commenter quipped: "I genuinely was expecting you to say bring a coat."

Some users nostalgically recalled their trips, with one sharing: "Never had an issue over there. Can't wait to go back in December."

Yet, not everyone is eager for a return trip, with one user remarking: "I don't know what is going on in Tenerife. I know it's not just Tenerife, but the vibe is off. I don't think I would go back, and I'm not alone in that."

Another contributor expressed concern: "Such a shame. Always come in the winter, but noticed it's definitely getting worse. Just don't feel safe in the evening."
