Exeter road to close for resurfacing

by · DevonLive

Exeter drivers have been warned of disruption in the next few months as residential road is set to be closed for resurfacing works. It's part of a year-long scheme to construct a new cycle lane.

Rifford Road will be completely resurfaced between Quarry Lane and Ludwell Lane, a route which one councillor says "has needed attention for some time" but that work has been delayed while the cycle lane is installed. The £1.55million scheme got underway in March and is due to last a year.

Councillor Marina Asvachin, County Councillor for Wonford and St Loyes, said: "I'm so pleased that this is happening. This road has needed attention for some time but the ongoing development of the cycle lane has unfortunately meant it's had to wait. Now residents will get the much-improved road surface they deserve."

The resurfacing will take place in three phases, the first starting next month. During this time, sections of Rifford Road will be closed to through traffic but Devon County Council says residents will be able to access their driveway for "most" of the duration of the works.

Councillor Stuart Hughes, Devon County Council Cabinet Member for Highway Management, said: "Every effort will be made to maintain vehicle access for residents and keep disruption to a minimum.

"Unfortunately, there will be times when this won't be possible due to the nature of the resurfacing works. This resurfacing will complete the enhancements being introduced through the cycle route scheme which will provide safer and easier access to active travel."

The first section to be closed will be from the junction with Quarry Lane to the junction with Lethbridge Road. This will start on Monday, December 2 and is due to be completed on Friday, December 13.

The next two phases will be from Lethbridge Road to Woodwater Lane and Woodwater Lane to Ludwell Lane/Coronation Road. Dates have not yet been confirmed for these sections but Devon County Council says it expects work to be carried out between January and March.

During the closures, there will be a diversion route, via East Wonford Hill, Butts Road, Bovemoors Lane, Dryden Road, Wonford Street and Burnthouse Lane. Emergency vehicles and pedestrians will still be able to access Rifford Road.
