  • Those using the Pixel 5a or Pixel 6a are advised to upgrade to a new version
  • The Pixel 5a came with a promise of 3 years of software updates and it was fulfilled

If you’re still holding onto your Google Pixel 5a, now might be the time to consider an upgrade. Launched in August 2021, the Pixel 5a came with a promise of three years of software updates. True to its word, Google rolled out what was believed to be the final update for the device in August 2024. However, much to users' surprise, Google has sent out one last update, continuing its recent trend of extending software support for devices nearing their end of life.

Reports from users on Reddit and tech platforms like Droid Life suggest that the Pixel 5a has just received another software update. This update, with version number AP2A.240805.005.S4, was expected to include the November security patch. However, users claim that the security patch level remains at August 2024. Despite this, the update brings some much-needed bug fixes and improvements to features like adaptive brightness, Bluetooth connectivity, and media player performance.

While the Pixel 5a was not officially launched in India, users of older models like the Pixel 6a may want to consider upgrading soon. With faster performance and better features available in newer models, it’s worth looking at the Google Pixel 9, OnePlus 12, or even waiting for upcoming models like the OnePlus 13, Oppo Find X8, or Samsung Galaxy S25.

In India, the Pixel 9 is available for Rs 79,999, while the OnePlus 12 is priced at Rs 64,999 on Amazon. The Samsung Galaxy S24+ can be purchased for Rs 64,999 on Flipkart. For those seeking the latest tech, waiting for the next generation of smartphones would be wise.

To recall, the Pixel 5a was announced in the global markets in 2021 and Google didn't bring it to the Indian market for a reason. The company had cited global supply chains for the limited availability of the Pixel 5a at launch. The Pixel 5a was a good smartphone. With its metal build, large 6.34-inch display, and water and dust resistance rating, it was a standout mid-range upgrade from the Pixel 4a.
