Lawn expert says 'you'll never have moss' if you do one simple thing now

Moss, often seen as a pesky intruder on garden lawns, can lead to dying grass and unsightly bare patches during the warmer months. However, before resorting to harsh chemical treatments, experts from the Lawn Association suggest a more gentle approach - scarifying.

This method not only revives your lawn but also promotes stronger growth. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) also endorses this technique, advising that it is most effective in autumn when the grass can recover quickly under mild, damp conditions.

Scarifying also prevents further moss infestation by removing the suffocating thatch layer - a build-up of organic brown matter beneath the grass that retains water and nutrient delivery to the roots. This lawn care process also encourages better aeration, allowing both air and water to circulate freely within the soil strata.

The Lawn Association experts explained: "When it comes to scarification, you are effectively pruning your lawn."

"Through this procedure, you are not trying to dominate nature, but instead, giving it a helping hand to work at its best by controlling the thatch, which in turn will probably mean you never have moss," reports the Express.

The Lawn Association advised: "By regularly aerating your lawn, you allow rainwater to run down into the soil and away from the surface, giving the moss spores less chance to germinate."

For a greener, thicker turf begin by cutting the grass shorter and then remove the moss with a spring-tined rake, or use a mechanical scarifier for better results. Creating crisp lines back and forth will expose the bald patches where seeds need to be spread.

To improve the lawn's resilience, apply a hearty autumn feed rich in potassium and phosphorus to encourage strong root growth. Following this, overseed any bare areas to ensure a full recovery.

Gardening experts concur that a thorough raking before winter is essential for a luxurious, drought-resistant lawn.
