In brief: Amazon has introduced its first branded televisions with mini-LED panels. The new Fire TV Omni mini-LED series is offered in four sizes and is described as the company's best and most innovative set to date.
Omni mini-LED sets feature a 4K QLED mini-LED display capable of delivering up to 1,400 nits of peak brightness, and support Dolby Vision IQ and HDR10+ Adaptive tech. The number of dimming zones varies depending on size, from 512 on the 55-inch model to 1,344 on the 85-inch variant.
You also get built-in far-field technology for a hands-free Alexa experience, and Intelligent Picture tech that uses artificial intelligence and the latest light and color sensors to enhance image quality in real time. Home theater enthusiasts will likely opt for manual setting adjustments, but non-enthusiasts could get a lot of mileage out of the feature.
Another consumer-facing feature, Ambient Experience, transforms the boring black screen into a canvas for artwork or helpful information when you're not sitting on the sofa and watching TV. We have seen similar features on sets from other manufacturers, and it must be popular enough for Amazon to jump on the bandwagon.
Amazon's interpretation utilizes a high-fidelity radar sensor that allows the on-screen imagery to dynamically respond to movement in front of the screen. Personally, I would not want my TV wasting electricity and unnecessarily reducing its lifespan when I'm not actively using it, but to each their own.
The new sets are also the company's first to be built with AMD FreeSync Premium Pro certification. They feature auto low latency mode and a 144 Hz game mode to help reduce input lag and visual artifacts in fast-paced games. Other amenities include Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2.
