Nationwide bringing in £216 charge for customers to access their bank account

Nationwide Building Society is hiking the fee on one of its most popular current accounts. Nationwide is increasing the charges on its FlexPlus packaged bank account which comes with a host of additional perks, the building society has confirmed.

Customers will spend £216 a year for the use of one of its popular current accounts when a new fee rise comes into effect. Nationwide account holders can also use their debit card abroad without incurring non-sterling transaction fees.

As it stands, FlexPlus customers pay £13 a month, or £156 a year, but this will change from December 1. After this date, the monthly fee will be hiked to £18 a month - a £5 per month or £60 a year rise, the building society has revealed.

Nationwide said: "Even after this change, FlexPlus will continue to be one of the UK’s most competitive packaged current accounts, both in price and quality of cover." There are no Nationwide charges for using your card abroad or in a non-sterling currency.

It includes cover for any eligible vehicle you're travelling in plus any vehicles you own, even if somebody else is driving. Provided by the AA. Your phone and those belonging to your partner and dependent children are covered for loss, theft, damage and faults by Assurant.

You also get worldwide travel insurance cover for your family, for trips up to 31 days. This includes cover for winter sports, travel disruptions and more from Aviva Insurance Limited. You can also upgrade your travel insurance to get the holiday cover you need.

You must be 18 or over, be a UK resident, agree the account is for personal use only and hold no more than 4 existing sole or joint Nationwide current accounts. You could also pocket £175 for switching too, Nationwide has said.
