Drivers could face £90 bill if they don't carry out car check 'every month'
by Oscar Fisher, James Rodger · Derbyshire LiveThe latest research has revealed that a staggering six out of 10 drivers don't know how to maintain their vehicles, sparking safety concerns. Tim Rodie, automotive expert at Motorpoint, advises that to cut costs on vehicle operations, routine maintenance is crucial.
He states: "It's surprising to learn that so many motorists lack confidence when it comes to completing basic car maintenance tasks and don't feel that it's their responsibility to know how to make these checks themselves at home. Ultimately, as road users we all have a responsibility to keep on top of our car maintenance and make sure that our vehicles are safe and roadworthy."
Rodie also emphasises the importance of regular oil checks, recommending once a month inspections and prompt refills when necessary. Recent figures from RAC suggest the average oil change cost in Britain now reaches £90.65 for 2024, including extracting old oil, swapping the oil filter, and adding new lubricant by a mobile mechanic.
Prices may vary depending on the age, type, and model of the car. Moreover, he reminded drivers: "Legally, all cars must have a minimum of 1.6mm thread across the central 75% of any tyre surface. While tyres will typically be checked when you get your car serviced, motorists are responsible for checking they have a safe amount of tread.", reports Birmingham Live.
"The easiest way to do this quickly at home is to take a 20p piece and insert it into the grooves on each of your tyres - if you can't see the outer band on the coin then you're above the legal limit and are safe to drive." He further stated: "It is easily overlooked, but engine oil is vital to minimise friction and keep your vehicle running smoothly."
"Motor oil keeps the inner workings of your car clean and reduces corrosion which can help your car stay in great shape for longer. Be sure to check your oil once a month or before any long journeys as a part of your car maintenance checklist."
