Strong cyclone to cause scattered rain across Myanmar from November 28 to 30

The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology (DMH)  has issued a warning about a strong cyclone expected to bring scattered rains to most regions and states of Myanmar from November 28 to 30. 

The cyclone, a deep depression forming in the southwestern Bay of Bengal, is currently stationary, located about 730 nautical miles west-southwest of Coco Island, Myanmar, and 265 nautical miles south-southeast of Chennai, India. The system has a central pressure of 999 hectopascals and winds reaching 35 to 40 miles per hour.

The cyclone, classified as a yellow alert due to its limited movement, is forecasted to shift north-northwestward, crossing the Sri Lankan coast and continuing towards the northern Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coast of India on November 30 as a severe cyclonic storm.

In Myanmar, this intense system is expected to bring rain to various regions, including Nay Pyi Taw, Sagaing, Mandalay, Magway, Bago, Yangon, Ayeyarwady, Kachin, Shan, Chin, Rakhine, and Kayah states. The rain will be accompanied by strong winds, thunder, lightning, and potential hailstorms as cloud formations develop, particularly over Tanintharyi Region.

The seas along the Myanmar coast will experience moderate conditions, with wave heights ranging from five to eight feet. Over the next two days, scattered rain is expected to continue in several regions, including Nay Pyi Taw, Mandalay, and Rakhine, among others.

In the past 24 hours, scattered rains have been observed in Shan State (South), Bago, Yangon, Tanintharyi, and Kayah states. Meanwhile, temperatures across Myanmar have varied, with Kachin State experiencing temperatures two degrees Celsius below the November average, while other regions, including Nay Pyi Taw, Yangon, and Ayeyarwady, saw temperatures two degrees above average. Shan State recorded temperatures three to four degrees above average.
