We're all aware of the significance of keeping our bodies in shape through proper nutrition and regular exercise. However, a balanced diet doesn't just aid in weight loss or maintenance; it also ensures your gut functions optimally, which has far-reaching implications for your overall health.
Good gut health is key to efficient digestion, mood enhancement, and even warding off chronic ailments like diabetes and inflammatory bowel disease. Given that around 80% of your immune system comes from your gut, compromised gut health can leave you susceptible to colds and flu.
Identifying poor gut health symptoms can be tricky, though. Many can be easily dismissed as hygiene-related issues or the result of a restless night.
So with that being said, one health expert has shared a viral video highlighting the key indicators to watch out for to ensure your gut is in good shape.
The Healthify Hub on TikTok revealed that facial breakouts are among the most overlooked signs of poor gut health. Waking up to a fresh pimple might be chalked up to hormonal fluctuations or a lapse in your skincare regimen, but it could actually signal subpar gut health.
Watch out for symptoms such as persistent bloating, swift mood fluctuations, constant fatigue, and a weakened immune system. Other more obvious indicators of gut health issues are food intolerances, unintended weight changes, intense cravings (particularly for sugar), and stomach upset.
Should you suspect that your gut health might be compromised, addressing it swiftly is crucial to avoid heightened risks of diabetes, heart disease, digestive troubles, autoimmune diseases, and even mental health issues.
Health Line indicates that alterations in lifestyle and diet can potentially "improve and reset" one's gut health. Recommendations include staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water, eating meals slowly to ease digestive discomfort, and making sure you get plenty of sleep every night to positively affect gut well-being.
Additionally, you could try to mitigate stress through meditation, yoga, or walking.
Diet-wise, it's suggested to consume foods rich in fibre like whole grains, veggies, nuts, and fruits. Fermented food items, such as yoghurt and kimchi, have been pointed out by studies as beneficial for the gut microbiome, alongside garlic.
Meanwhile, collagen-enhancing foods are reputed to aid gut health, with broccoli, meat, eggs, and citrus fruits being prime examples.
The NHS guidelines for a balanced diet recommend eating five portions of fruit and vegetables daily, alongside high-fibre starchy foods, dairy, and protein. Men are advised to aim for 2,500 calories per day, while women should target 2,000.
