Gautam Adani and others are accused in the New York indictment of paying Indian government officials $250 million to secure solar energy supply contracts.

The Adani Group has denied the allegations of bribery and fraud, calling them "baseless".

Those bribes were "to lie to investors and banks to raise billions of dollars, and to obstruct justice," the Deputy Assistant Attorney General said.

Gautam Adani, India's second-richest man, and seven others including his nephew Sagar have been charged with paying bribes to unidentified officials of state governments in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha to buy expensive solar power, potentially earning more than $2 billion profit over 20 years.

In 2022, Gautam Adani said the company would invest USD 70 billion in clean energy projects by 2032. The company has a clean energy portfolio of over 20 gigawatts, including one of the world's largest solar power plants in the southern state of Tamil Nadu.

The five-count indictment also accuses Gautam’s nephew Sagar R. Adani and Vneet S. Jaain, both executives at an Indian renewable-energy company, of breaking federal laws.
